Mid-infrared optical bistability in germanium-based ring resonators

14 April 2026 • 09:20 - 09:40 CEST | Churchill (Niveau/Level 1)

Abstract

We report optical bistability in Ge-based integrated ring resonators, namely Ge/Si and SiGe0.4/Si, in the mid-infrared (MIR) wavelength around 4 µm at low power levels of around ∼ 10 mW (on-chip). This shows the high potential of Ge-based microresonators for MIR nonlinear photonics.

Ujjal Chettri was born in Gangtok, Sikkim, India, in 2001. He received his B.Sc. (Hons.) and M.Sc. degrees in Physics from the Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Learning in 2022 and 2024, respectively. During his master’s program, he worked on developing a femtosecond Z-scan setup for nonlinear characterization of materials to be used as saturable absorbers in ultrafast fiber lasers, through which he developed a strong interest in laser physics and nonlinear photonics. Following this interest, he is currently pursuing his doctoral research in the area of mid-infrared microcombs on CMOS-based platforms at the Institut des Nanotechnologies de Lyon, École Centrale de Lyon, France. His Ph.D. is part of the MicrocombSys Doctoral Network, funded by the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions, since 2024. His research interests include the development of high-Q-factor microresonators for microcombs generation in various CMOS platforms in the mid-infrared.
