Project-driven and AI-based platform-empowered: teaching reform of optical system design course

16 April 2026 • 09:10 - 09:30 CEST | Madrid 2/Salon 4 (Niveau/Level 0)

Abstract

To address insufficient practical training, limited class hours and low theoretical teaching efficiency in the undergraduate Optical System Design course, the School of Optics and Photonics of Beijing Institute of Technology launched an in-depth teaching reform centering on project-driven and AI-enabled approaches. The reform integrates cutting-edge enterprise projects into the whole teaching process, establishes a school-enterprise joint training mechanism with enterprise experts teaching in class and students conducting on-site enterprise practice, and achieves closed-loop training for students from project scheme conception to product validation. An independent AI smart teaching platform, incorporating MOOCs, knowledge graphs, LLMs and 7×24 intelligent teaching assistants, supports students' autonomous learning of aberration theory and optical design software operation, and offers data-driven personalized learning paths. By shifting theoretical and software learning to the after-class AI platform, in-class time is fully devoted to project discussion and problem-solving, greatly improving teaching efficiency and effectively fostering students' engineering practice and innovative design capabilities of optical systems.
