James Sydor has spent more than four decades shaping the precision-optics industry. As chairman of Sydor Optics, Sydor transformed a small family business into one of Rochester's most respected precision-optics manufacturers. Under his leadership, the company grew from a two-person shop, into a thriving business with more than 70 employees and a legacy of innovation, integrity, and customer-centered values. He is also a highly respected leader in the optics industry, serving as President of the American Precision Optics Manufacturing Association (APOMA). Through his association with APOMA, Sydor was instrumental in turning what was once a small local trade show into SPIE’s OPTIFAB conference, which includes North America’s largest optical fabrication exhibition. OPTIFAB brings together more than 150 companies from all over the world to showcase the latest in optical fabrication technology. An SPIE Member for over 20 years, Sydor has served in many volunteer roles for the Society, including conference chair, symposia chair, and technical program committee member.

Sydor has always been a passionate advocate for optics education. Monroe Community College (MCC) is the nation’s first community college to award associate degrees in optical systems technology for the professional training of optical technicians. When enrollment in the MCC optics program had fallen to just six students in 2008, Sydor worked with two of his closest colleagues to bring the program back from the brink. Together, they reimagined the curriculum, rallied industry support, and partnered closely with MCC faculty to ensure the program’s future. Today, there are more than 170 students enrolled in the program, and, with strong community and industry backing, it is a model of stability and success. Most recently, Sydor and his two sons made a transformational gift to establish MCC’s Sydor Optics Advanced Technology Center which is due to open in the fall of 2026. The new center is expected to elevate the student-learning experience even further. The Sydor family’s generosity will ensure MCC students have the tools, training, and opportunities to thrive in the optics industry for years to come.

“Jim Sydor exemplifies what it means to be an icon, a leader whose vision, generosity, and dedication have left an indelible mark,” notes 2026 SPIE President and Professor of Optics at the University of Rochester Julie Bentley in her nominating letter. “His legacy is one of innovation, mentorship, and community-building. Jim’s contributions continue to shape lives, industries, and institutions, making him a truly deserving recipient of this award.”
