SPIE is pleased to announce the launch of the SPIE Award for Excellence in Leadership, a new Society Award that will debut as part of the 2027 SPIE Society Awards program.
This award recognizes and honors an individual who exemplifies outstanding leadership across industry, academia, government, and beyond by advancing optics and photonics while empowering others to succeed. It celebrates leaders whose vision, influence, and collaborative approach have strengthened the global optics and photonics community and positioned the field for long‑term impact and sustainability.
Award criteria
Nominees for the SPIE Award for Excellence in Leadership will be evaluated based on the following criteria:
Vision, innovation, and entrepreneurship
Demonstrated ability to articulate and realize a compelling vision, or to lead transformative initiatives that advance optics and photonics through innovation, entrepreneurship, or strategic leadership.
Impact and influence
Proven influence through education, mentorship, advocacy, or leadership activities that have meaningfully shaped the optics and photonics community or profession.
Collaboration and team building
A strong record of building bridges across disciplines, institutions, sectors, or geographic borders to foster inclusive, effective, and enduring partnerships.
Sustainability and future focus
Contributions that promote the long‑term sustainability, resilience, and continued growth of the optics and photonics field.
Nominations
The SPIE Award for Excellence in Leadership will appear on the 2027 SPIE Society Awards nomination slate. Nominations will open on 1 April 2026.
