As governments pour money into quantum R&D, Photonics Focus explores the ways this burgeoning field intersects with people working in optics and photonics. Light-based methods of quantum computing offer an alternative approach to the better-known approaches pursued by Google and IBM; we take a deep dive into quantum encryption to find out whether our information can ever really be secure; and we explore a fundamental question surrounding a most fundamental particle by asking "what, exactly, is a photon?"
