Dr. Xiangyang Tang is Professor of Radiology and Imaging Sciences in Emory University School of Medicine. With his PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Rochester in 2002, Dr. Tang is a researcher with extensive expertise and experience in Medical Imaging focused on x-ray Computed Tomography (CT), throughout his career in both academia (Emory since 2009) and industry (GE 2001-2008). He is also a Medical Physicist certified by the American Board of Radiology (ABR) in diagnostic medical physics to provide consulting support on CT protocol optimization and dose reduction in clinical practice. He has been engaged and made significant contributions to the technological advancement in cone beam CT (CBCT) and multi-detector CT (MDCT). In his tenure with GE Healthcare, he delivered the image reconstruction solutions to GE’s two generations of flagship CT (LightSpeed VCT64 and Discovery CT750 HD) and hundreds of them are running daily worldwide to save life and improve the quality of life. Since joining Emory University, Dr. Tang has been leading the effort in R&D of phase contrast CT and recently in photon-counting spectral CT. As SPIE fellow and recipient of Distinguished Investigator Award of the Academy for Radiology & Biomedical Imaging Research, 19 US patents have been issued under his name, alongside more than 150 publications in journal, proceedings, conferences and book chapters. He has been actively making contributions to the scientific societies and organizations, via his service as Associate Editor of leading scientific journals in the field (Medical Physics), member of scientific program committees of professional organizations (e.g., RSNA) and scientific conferences. Dr. Tang has also served on numerous NIH study sections, especially his service on the NIH ZRG1 SBIB-T (10) Special Emphasis Panel on Biomedical Imaging, in addition to other foundational study sections, such as American Cancer Society and American Heart Association.
