Dr. Derek Nankivil is the Fellow of Advanced Optics Technologies at the Center of Excellence in Research & Development at Alcon Vision in Johns Creek, Georgia, USA. Derek’s primary research objectives involve the fundamental science relating visual perception and retinal optical stimuli and the development of novel vision corrections. Derek received his B.Sc. in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Central Florida, his M.Sc. in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Miami, and his Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering with a certificate in Photonics from Duke University. He has performed research in the areas of nanomechanics, laser surgery, liquid crystal optical phased arrays, ocular growth and senescence, optomechanics of accommodation, corneal transplantation, accommodation restoration, intraocular lenses, tear film, ophthalmic imaging, virtual reality and art conservation. Derek is a Fellow of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO), a Fellow of the International Society for Optics and Photonics (SPIE), and a Member of Optica formally the Optical Society of America (OSA). He previously served on the Commercial Relations Committee of ARVO, and he presently serves on the Program Committee in Ophthalmic Technologies of SPIE. He has reviewed for Biomedical Optics Express, Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science, Journal of Cataract & Refractive Surgery, Ophthalmic & Physiological Optics, Optics Letters, Optica, PLOS One, Translational Vision Science & Technology, and the Journal of the Optical Society of America.
