Dr. Dangyuan Lei

Dangyuan LEI is Professor of Materials Science and Engineering, Professor of Physics (joint appointment) and Deputy Director of the Centre for Functional Photonics at The City University of Hong Kong, and was the Provost's Visiting Professor of Physics at Imperial College London. He received his BSc, MPhil and PhD degrees all in Physics from Northwest University (National Physics Talent Training Base), The Chinese University of Hong Kong and Imperial College London in 2005, 2007 and 2011, respectively.

His research interest centers on the quantum, nonlinear and intelligent nano-photonics as well as ultrafast spectroscopy of photon-exciton-phonon coupling in low-dimensional semiconductors, with particular interest in the nanoscale cavity-enhanced light-matter interaction physics and intelligent nanodevices for sensing, imaging, energy conversion and saving. He has published 282 journal papers, given 2 plenary talks, 14 keynote speeches and 130 invited talks, and received 18600 citations and an h-index of 77. His work on multiphoton-pumped, ultralow-threshold perovskite lasing was selected as one of the Top 50 Most Read Nature Communications Articles of 2020 in Physics, and his co-invention of a smart radiative cooling coating was highlighted as “Editor’s Choice” of Science (2020) and its applications in the thermal management of green buildings and skin electronics received two Gold Medals from the International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva (2022 & 2023). His recent invention of the Plasmonic Photothermal Printing Technology (PPPT) was highlighted in Nature Materials, Nature Synthesis and Light: Science & Applications (by Professor Eric Mazur of Harvard University).

He joined SPIE as an Individual Member in 2016, obtained a Lifetime Membership in 2017 and became a Senior Member in 2025. He also joined Optica as an Individual Member in 2015 and became a Senior Member in 2020.
